Report of the Secretary-Matt Wagner

The 2015 meeting minutes were approved by a majority at the beginning of the 2016 business meeting. No edits were made and minutes were subsequently uploaded to the SFC website.

Much of the rest of the year was devoted to answering emails and dispersing messages to the membership via email. Most effort was made to communicate meeting announcements was focused on e-mail communication; however, posts were made to the SFC Facebook page as well. During the course of registering members for the 2016 meeting, issues with family memberships being able to register did arise and are being investigated. Extra shirts from the 2016 meeting will be sold on a request basis and leftovers will be brought to the 2017 meeting for sale.

See attached and address treasurer’s report issues to Mike Sandel at msandel@uwa.edu. Additionally the fishy stuff auction raised $2,173.

Report of the Committees

Awards Committee: Kyle Piller, Bryn Tracy, Alexis Janosik and Ginny Adams

For the 2016 meeting 17 students applied and 11 were awarded travel awards ($100 each) that encompassed multiple universities based on a random draw of names. A donation option was added for student travel to the meeting registration and $991 was donated via Wild Apricot in 2017 between travel donations and the auction.

No individual may receive this award if the already are receiving an overall best award.

With the new voted on awards and totals, $3200 will need to be allocated to awards in future meetings.

Resolutions Committee - Rebecca Johansen, Pat Rakes, and Chris Skelton

Nothing to report

Program Committee - Matt Wagner

Recommendations made from personal experience that the program committee chair should not be the SFC secretary due to a conflict of interest in duties during a meeting. Program committee should consist of 2-3 members.

Constitution Committee

Nothing to report.

Proceedings Committee and State Reports - Ben Keck and Brook Fluker

First article in 2016 issue, by Steve Powers, had over 100 downloads in the first week of being published. 

Readership is international, but focused in the southeastern US.

State reports for 2015 need to be submitted by December 2016. Ben will be contacting old state representatives and searching for new ones to better organize state reporting.

Technical Advisory Committee

Membership Committee-Jim Williams

Total members 2016 – 170, student members 42

Recommend get info to Southern Division of AFS for meeting advertisement.

Push for more Facebook posts by members

Jim will be stepping down from this post at the 2017 meeting. New volunteers are encouraged to inquire with the executive committee if they wish to serve.

Website Committee - Jake Schaeffer

Abstract and process went well. The Fishes of TN book link was updated. Open call for people to help with content or design. Ken Sterling has offered to help.

Meeting Site Committee - Bernie Kujada

In 2017, Chattanooga local committees have agreed to host. Vote for Chattanooga, TN in 2017 had unanimous approval.

Open call for 2018 and 2019 hosts. Local committees need to think about volunteering. Tanya Darden mentioned potential in SC.

Old Business

Investing money- need volunteers to populate a committee to investigate. Call for volunteers to be part of the committee. Ben Keck and Cindy Williams offered to look into some options.

New Business

Ginny Adams- Asked if there was an interest in workshops or round table lunch with an emphasis on teaching improvement. Overall multiple people showed interest and a show of hands for an active lunch encouraged future development of this idea.

Bernie Kuhajda- Sampling field trips associated with meeting at the discretion of the local host. There will be one at 2017 Chattanooga to see snail darters.

Mention of a 5 minute lightning talk session at the 2017 conference had a very positive approval.  No abstract, title only without time for questions. This would be at the discretion of the local host to plan.
