Southeastern Fishes Council
Dedicated to the Conservation of Southeastern Fishes

Commerce Park within or near the recharge area of Key Cave
Resolution of the Southeastern Fishes Council
Approved by the Membership April 2004
Whereas the Southeastern Fishes Council is dedicated to the conservation of southeastern fishes and other aquatic fauna, AND

Whereas the Alabama cavefish, Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni, is one of the rarest and most endangered species of fishes in the world, its critical imperilment being due to its low population size (less than 100 individuals), restriction to a single cave (Key Cave) in Lauderdale County, Alabama, and threats to the cave's recharge area, AND

Whereas the phantom cave crayfish, Procambarus pecki, is restricted to three caves in northern Alabama, and one of these is Key Cave, AND

Whereas vigilant protection of this cave and its recharge area is paramount to the continued existence of these species, AND

Whereas the official position of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as outlined in its Recovery Plans for the Alabama cavefish, states that factors likely to cause a decline of S. poulsoni include unsuccessful reproduction from alteration of flood cycles within the aquifer, degradation of groundwater, drainage and hydrologic alterations, and lower ground water levels, AND

Whereas portions of the proposed Eddie Frost Commerce Park have been shown to lie within the recharge area of Key Cave and therefore has a high potential to introduce pollutants into the aquifer and reduce water flow to the Key Cave recharge area, thereby posing direct threats to the critical habitat of the S. poulsoni,

Therefore Be It Resolved that the Southeastern Fishes Council urges the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State of Alabama to oppose the construction of the Eddie Frost Commerce Park within or near the recharge area of Key Cave,

Be It Futher Resolved that copies of this resolution be sent to:
