2025 Southeastern Fishes Council 51st Annual Meeting

Embassy Suites - Tuscaloosa, AL

20-21 November 2025

The local membership is excited to welcome SFC to Tuscaloosa, Alabama - one of the historical landmarks of our organization and home to the University of Alabama Ichthyological Collection. Tuscaloosa is nestled near hotspots of freshwater biodiversity in the Black Warrior, Cahaba, and Sipsey Rivers.

Hotel Information

We have secured block rates for two hotels. Our meeting will take place at the Embassy Suites, so most members should book there. NOTE: The default stay is Wed only, so you'll need to edit your stay by changing "20 November" to "21 November." If you have any issues with hotel registration, email michael.sandel@msstate.edu.

The Homewood Suites offers larger spaces (great for families) but it is a 4-5 minute walk from the venue:

Both hotels offer complimentary full breakfast, overlook the Black Warrior River, and are along the scenic Tuscaloosa Riverwalk connecting multiple parks.

Pre-Meeting Events

We will kick things off with a freshwater invertebrate identification workshop and museum tour on Wednesday 1-4pm CT.

The Invertebrate ID workshop will take place at Honors Hall on the University of Alabama campus:

Workshop participants requiring parking should use ParkMobile

The nearest parking deck is the Transportation Hub Parking Deck:

Tuscaloosa's own Worth Pugh will lead the UAIC walking tour from 4:30-5:30pm, and will cover the UA Ichthyological, Herpetological, and Freshwater Decapod collections.

Our first social will be Wednesday at Avenue Pub at 6pm (or whenever you show up!). Free hot food will be provided along with cash bar.

Post-Meeting Events

On Saturday, 22 November, we have organized a field trip to the Cahaba River, guided by the one and only Dr. Bernie Kuhajda. Attendees will want to book a hotel room on Friday night at the Hampton Inn in Bessemer:

We are working on getting special permission for this group event for those who do not have Alabama scientific collecting permits. Specimen or tissue collection will be limited to those possessing appropriate collection permits. The plan is for 3-4 hours of fun. For additional details, reach out to Dr. Kuhajda at brk@tnaqua.org.
